Let’s kick things off with three SEO and AI developments from September 2026.
TL;DR: 3 SEO & AI search updates to know
- YouTube is expanding its AI search experience. Ask YouTube is reaching more desktop users, bringing conversational search closer to the mainstream.
- Google is making AI Overviews more dynamic. Search results are evolving toward more detailed, AI-generated answers when Google’s systems determine they’re useful.
- AI visibility can change quickly. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations dropped 86.4% in just four days, highlighting the need for a diversified search strategy.
Let’s break down what each update means for marketers.
1. YouTube is expanding its AI search experience
YouTube is expanding its Ask YouTube conversational AI search experience to signed-in users in the U.S. who are 13 and older on desktop. Previously limited to a Premium-focused test, the expansion brings the experience to a broader audience.
What this means for YouTube SEO and AI search:
Whether you realize it or not – YouTube has been more than just a place to watch sports highlights, vloggers, and inspiration for your workout routines. YouTube exists as it’s own search engine where users can discover and interact with brands, people, and places.
Ask YouTube allows users to interact with an AI-powered search experience rather than relying exclusively on traditional search results and video lists. For marketers, this is another reminder that YouTube deserves to be treated as a discovery platform, not just a content library.
If your brand is creating helpful, relevant video content, the opportunity isn’t limited to ranking in YouTube search. It’s also about making your content understandable, useful, and discoverable within increasingly AI-driven experiences.
The takeaway? Video strategy and search strategy are becoming more closely connected. If YouTube isn’t part of your broader organic visibility plan, it’s worth taking another look.

2. Google is dynamically expanding AI Overviews for some queries
Google is experimenting with a more dynamic approach to AI Overviews. For certain queries, Google’s systems can expand an AI Overview into a more detailed response when they determine that additional information would be useful to the searcher.
How Google AI overviews impact SEO:
Google search is moving further away from a one-size-fits-all results page. Instead of showing the same format for every query, Google is increasingly adapting the experience to the complexity of the question and the information it believes users need.
This is part of a broader shift toward AI-powered search experiences as Google looks to slowly but surely move towards an AI-mode-prioritized search experience while moving users away from the traditional search engine experience.
For marketers, this reinforces something we’ve been talking about for a while: ranking for a keyword is only one part of the visibility equation. Your content needs to answer real questions, demonstrate expertise, and provide information that search engines and AI systems can understand and use. That means investing in strong foundational SEO, clear content structure, and genuinely useful information is more important than chasing individual search features.

3. Reddit’s ChatGPT Search citations fell 86% in four days
According to new Promptwatch data reported by Search Engine Land, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86.4% in just four days, dropping from 3.83% to an average of 0.52%.
This is a huge shift in just a short amount of time that sent the industry into a tailspin as everyone tried to figure out what they should do next.
What the Reddit AI citations shift means for search visibility:
Reddit has become an important source of information in many AI-generated answers. Its communities offer real-world experiences, opinions, and discussions that can help AI platforms respond to user questions. As a result, many digital marketing experts have recommended brands get active and engage with users on Reddit for improved visibility.
We now see that a strategy can be relevant and crucial for a moment then flipped on it’s head before you know it. What gets cited today might not get cited tomorrow. Platform changes, model updates, query behavior, and shifts in source selection can all influence which websites and communities appear in AI-generated responses.
So, what’s the lesson for marketers? Don’t put all your eggs in one AI visibility basket.
A strong search everywhere optimization strategy should account for the many places people and AI systems discover information, including:
- Traditional search engines like Google and Bing
- AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity
- YouTube and other video platforms
- Reddit and other online communities
- Social search across platforms like TikTok and Instagram
- Local search, reviews, and business listings
The goal isn’t to be everywhere just for the sake of being everywhere. It’s to understand where your audience is searching and build a presence across the channels that matter to your business.
AI visibility is evolving. Your strategy should be able to evolve with it.

The bigger picture: Organic search is changing, so your strategy should, too
If there’s one thing these three updates have in common, it’s that search is becoming more dynamic. YouTube is making discovery more conversational. Google is adapting how it delivers AI-generated answers. And changes in AI citations show just how quickly visibility can shift across platforms.
The good news? You don’t need to reinvent your entire SEO strategy every time a new update drops. Strong technical foundations, useful content, credible expertise, and a clear understanding of your audience still matter. What’s changing is where those fundamentals need to work and how we measure success.
That’s the thinking behind search everywhere optimization: looking beyond a single search engine to understand how brands are discovered, evaluated, and chosen across the broader digital ecosystem.
We’ll continue tracking these changes and breaking them down in future episodes of The Search Brief.
