Watch now: Learn how AI search engines evaluate, extract, and cite content—and the specific optimization tactics our SEO team recommends for improving visibility across popular LLMs: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI experiences.

Search everywhere optimization starts with AI-ready content

In a recent Search Engine Land survey, 37% of consumers said they now start their search journey with an AI tool, and 60% believe AI delivers better answers, with fewer ads, less effort, and information synthesized into an easy-to-digest format.

This is exactly what makes SEO more important than ever, not less. AI-driven search is built on the same foundation as traditional SEO. It rewards high-quality content, strong brand authority, E-E-A-T principles, and structured data. The brands we see winning citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI experiences are overwhelmingly the same brands that took foundational SEO seriously before generative engines arrived. Our SEO experts help brands adapt by focusing on where and how discovery actually happens, optimizing not just for search engines, but for AI, humans, and the platforms that shape decisions.

That’s why we launched our Search Everywhere Optimization webinar series, a weekly deep dive into each core component of the modern, AI-driven search environment, from content and YouTube to Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, and local search.

In our first session, our SEO team broke down the content optimization strategies that determine whether AI engines extract, cite, and recommend your brand.

Webinar takeaways: How to create content built for AI search

  • Lead with unique content and proprietary data. AI models prioritize unique, proprietary content. Turn internal data into annual reports, surveys, and trend pieces; publish original frameworks and definitions; and use real customer examples, testimonials, and case studies that your competitors can’t replicate.
  • Establish unshakable credibility through E-E-A-T. Give every piece of content a visible author with a byline, demonstrated expertise, and a detailed bio page linking to external validation. For technical or medical content, add a “reviewed by expert” tag, the way Investopedia fact-checks every article.
  • Cite your sources like a college essay. Use clear attribution language such as “according to the CDC” so AI models can easily verify and extract your claims, and include expert quotes to strengthen trust and authority.
  • Front-load your most important information. With 44% of ChatGPT citations coming from the first third of content, open with a clear purpose statement, an answer-first summary (TL;DR, key takeaways, or bottom line), primary keywords, and a table of contents with proper anchor tags. Don’t get hung up on the literal “TL;DR” label; what matters is elevating the key insight high on the page.
  • Optimize for natural conversations and topic depth. Map your H2 and H3 headings to the way people actually ask questions (“How do I start a podcast?” followed by equipment and cost follow-ups), answer each in two to four direct sentences, and close with three to five longtail FAQs sourced from Google’s People Also Ask.
  • Keep content fresh. Content less than three months old is 35% more likely to be cited than content that’s 9 to 12 months old, per AirOps. Display “published on” and “updated on” dates, refresh stats to the current year, and audit content on a consistent cadence. Quarterly audits broken into site sections are far more manageable than one massive sitewide project.
  • Write direct, clear copy. AI engines struggle with jargon, clever wordplay, and heavy branded messaging. Minimize the marketing language and make your information as simple and explicit as possible.
  • Format for machine readability. Keep citable content in clean HTML (AI crawlers don’t render JavaScript or see images), maintain a logical heading hierarchy with one H1 per page, and use numbered steps, bullet points, and tables to create bite-sized, extractable chunks.
  • Invest in rich media and optimize it. Images, diagrams, charts, embedded video, and social feeds boost engagement signals and support AI’s increasingly visual results. Then make that media machine-readable with descriptive alt text, captions and transcripts, and keyword-rich file names.
  • Train your content team. Educate copywriters on these tactics with documentation and best-practice guides, and increase collaboration between SEO, content, social, and creative teams. What writers produce has a direct impact on AI performance.

Strong SEO fundamentals still win in the age of GEO

If there’s one theme that ran through the entire webinar, it’s this: the brands performing best in AI-driven search aren’t chasing a secret new playbook. They’re executing foundational SEO with more discipline than ever. Clear structure, credible authorship, cited sources, fresh content, and clean technical formatting have always been best practices. Generative engines have simply raised the stakes, because now those signals determine whether your brand is the one synthesized into the answer or left out of the conversation entirely.

The other throughline is that none of this comes at the expense of the human experience. Answer-first summaries, scannable formatting, expert credibility, and rich media are exactly what real people want from content, too. People scan. People trust sources. People engage with visuals. Optimizing for AI extraction and optimizing for user experience are, increasingly, the same job done well.
